Supporting Ashford residents in need since 1679
At Ashford Relief in Need, our mission is to provide support when it is needed for people of Ashford.
Way back in 1679 Mrs. Mary Reeve bequeathed land in Laleham and Feltham, for which the rent was to be applied to the distribution of bread to the poor of Ashford and Laleham.
A further annuity was added in 1723 by Jerrard Tomlin, and again the requirements were for the distribution of loaves to the poor who attended the sermon that was preached on the anniversary of his death.
The charity of Anne Webb, locally known as the 'Dog' Charity in 1801, provided several legacies to take effect after the death of her dog Don, on 27 October 1808.
In 1809, the Enclosures act allotted land to the charity and the rental derived from that continued to be allocated to those in need. The Poor Allotment or Coal Charity as it was known has been regulated by a scheme of the Charity Commissioners since 24 August 1877.
In 1986, ARIN (Ashford Relief in Need) was formed by the amalgamation of all these other various charities and is now recognised under this name by the Charity Commission.Ashford. This developed over the course of time, still with the purpose of supporting the poor and needed. In 1964 we became a registered charity.
